Modern Foreign Languages
The MFL faculty has a suite of 4 classrooms with whiteboard projectors, a workroom and an oral/aural recording room with individual booths for students. One of the classrooms has an Interactive Whiteboard and another has a suite of networked PC's. Each member of staff has their own classroom with sets of textbooks, audio equipment
and links to internet resources.
The faculty has established links with local primary schools and is a member of the Fleetwood Primary Modern Languages Consortium.
KS3
All students in KS3 study either French or Spanish for 2 hours per week. Students are placed in sets on arrival at Fleetwood Sports College and these are reviewed throughout the KS. Students are regularly assessed in the 4 language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and kept informed about their National Curriculum progress. Students in Year 8 and 9 sit assessment papers for the FCSE (Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education) Level 1 qualification. This is a public examination and it may be used for progression on to KS4 language courses or for access to Post-16 qualifications in other curriculum areas.
KS4
At KS4 students can choose to continue their study of French or Spanish to GCSE level. Students receive up to three hours per week and are entered for the WJEC GCSE examination. The faculty uses a variety of textbooks, interactive learning materials and language websites. Students are encouraged to develop their independent study skills by using resources and links on Moodle. A language GCSE May be used for further study of the same language at Post-16 or for students who may wish to begin the study of a new Foreign Language and want to show they have the necessary learning skills.
The faculty also offers a Travel and Tourism BTEC which is a useful qualification for any student interested in working the tourist industry, which is one of the most rapidly expanding industries in the North West. The faculty is also involved in the delivery of the Travel and Tourism Diploma to students across the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre authorities.
