Mathematics

The department is housed in a suite of eight specialist mathematics rooms. Each classroom is well resourced with mathematical equipment. All have interactive whiteboards.

Key Stage Three
Students are placed in ability sets before they arrive in year 7 based on their scores at Key Stage Two. This arrangement is regularly reviewed with formal assessments taking place each half term. In Year 8 and 9, students are placed in two parallel ability bands. Based on performance in regular half termly assessments.

The department has adapted it's Schemes of Work and new National Curriculum following the introduction of the Key Stage Three Mathematics Framework. All lessons are objective based, with an emphasis on developing Using and Applying Mathematics, problem solving and interactive learning.

Key Stage Four
Most students follow and are entered for the OCR Graduated Assessment GCSE exam, and will take 2 units in Year 10 and 1 in Year 11. The best 2 unit scores will make up 50% of their final GCSE mark, the terminal exam in Year 11 will provide the other 50%.

Students on the "Steps to Work" programme will take a linear GCSE exam
