English
The syllabi & courses on offer include English, English Literature, Key Skills, Media Studies ALAN level 1 and 2 and English as a second language for exchange students up to GCSE.
The department's commitment to the college mission statement means that we either teach in mixed ability classes or gender split classes according to the needs of the students, catering for the full age and ability range with enrichment and support classes for the most able students as well as for those who find these subjects more difficult. Every student's progress is closely monitored so that they are given every opportunity to maximise their potential.
Individual Education Plans and Mentoring Sessions are also used to support, guide and set targets for our students, where the students themselves get their own short and long term goals within the faculty.
As well as this broad curriculum the department also offers a range of extra-curricular activities such as workshops in understanding and enjoying Shakespeare; and speaking and listening.
We also hold 'Gifted &Talented' workshops; theatre trips and, in our consistent endeavour to raise aspirations, "taster days" at the Universities. Outside speakers and writers are invited in and we have enjoyed many exciting days in the company of poets like Levi Tafari.
