C.S. Lewis Gymnazium - Slovakia Link School

During October of this year Mr. Roe and I spent a week in an eastern European country, Slovakia.  This trip was arranged by the British Council and the Youth Sports Trust to establish links between schools in the UK and schools abroad.

Sports Schools from the North West were invited to Slovakia with 19 members of staff from schools across Lancashire travelling to various schools in the country.

Mr Roe and I were lucky enough to be sent to a school called C. S. Lewis Gymnazium.  This is a bilingual school where students were taught in both their own language and in English.  There were many differences between this school and ours. For example there are only around 150 students, aged 14 – 19 attending the high school.

That’s not even a whole year group in our school!  Also, in their first year they have 30 hours of lessons a week, 20 hours taught in English.  Remember, English isn’t their first language.  Just imagine having your history, science and maths lessons taught to you in French!

Like our school, staff are enthusiastic about getting the personal best out of their students and were eager to establish a link with our School.  Mr Roe and I also had opportunities to see the capital city of Bratislava and many other sights of cultural interest, including the beautiful Devin castle.

Since then, staff from C.S. Lewis School has visited our School.  You may have seen them around school.  Both Jana and Stanislava were amazed by our building and the number of students we have here.  It’s just a shame that the weather wasn’t better for them!  But that’s British summer time for you.

This link is about to open up amazing opportunities for both schools; staff and students alike.  In November 2007 a staff exchange will be taking place between the schools and we anticipate a student exchange early in 2008. This is an amazing opportunity that both schools hope will last many years!
